PC Fan Noise on Stream: Positioning Fixes Before Software Fixes

Software noise suppression is very good at hiding fan noise and not very good at hiding the fact that it is working. Push a filter hard enough to erase a loud PC and your voice starts to sound thin, swirly or clipped at the edges of words. The better sequence is to reduce how much fan noise reaches the microphone physically, and only then let a filter mop up what remains. Most of the physical fixes are free and take less than an hour.

How Fan Noise Gets Into the Mic

There are two paths. The obvious one is through the air: fans move air, turbulence makes a broadband whoosh, and the microphone hears it just as you do. The less obvious path is through the furniture. A case sitting on the desk passes vibration into the desktop, up the mic stand and into the capsule as a low hum or rumble.

Each path has a different cure. Airborne noise responds to distance, direction and barriers. Structural vibration responds to decoupling. Diagnose before you act: record a few seconds of silence under gaming load, then lift the mic stand off the desk and hold it in your hand while recording again. If the hum drops sharply, vibration is a major contributor.

Physical Fixes, Cheapest First

Distance and barriers

Sound level falls quickly as distance increases, so every extra foot between the case and the microphone helps. If the tower sits on the desk beside your monitor, moving it to the floor on the far side is often the single biggest improvement available. The desk itself then acts as a barrier between the fans and the mic. Keep bottom intakes off thick carpet and the exhaust clear of walls and curtains.

Be careful not to trade noise for heat. A case shoved into a closed cabinet runs hotter, the fans spin faster, and you end up louder than where you started.

Aim the dead side at the noise

Cardioid microphones, which covers most streaming mics, are least sensitive directly behind the capsule. Arrange things so the rear of the mic points at the PC and the front points at your mouth. On a boom arm this usually means bringing the mic in from the side opposite the tower. Check the manual for your model’s orientation, since some mics are addressed from the end and others from the side, and pointing the wrong face at yourself undoes everything.

Then close the gap between mouth and mic. At a hand’s width or less, your voice becomes far louder relative to the fans, and you can lower the gain. Lower gain means less fan in the signal, with no processing at all.

Quiet the machine itself

Dust is the cheapest fix in computing. Clogged filters and heatsinks force fans to spin harder for the same cooling, so clean them before changing anything else.

Next, look at fan curves. Motherboard firmware and GPU utilities let you set how fan speed responds to temperature, and default curves are often more aggressive than necessary. A gentler ramp, with a small delay before speeding up, avoids the constant revving that microphones and filters both handle badly. A steady tone is easier to live with, and easier to suppress, than one that surges every time a match loads. Keep an eye on temperatures while you experiment and stay within the limits your component makers recommend.

Capping your frame rate helps too. If the game renders far more frames than your monitor or stream can show, the GPU is generating heat and fan noise for nothing. For vibration, a shock mount on the mic, a boom arm clamped to a separate surface, or soft feet under the case will interrupt the path through the desk.

Now Add Software, Gently

With the physical work done, the filter has a small job. In OBS, a noise suppression filter on the mic source followed by a modest noise gate is usually enough. Set the gate’s thresholds just above the remaining fan level so it closes between sentences without chopping quiet words. Owners of RTX-class NVIDIA cards can use NVIDIA Broadcast for the suppression stage, though it is sensible to avoid running it alongside a second suppressor.

The Order That Gets Results

Work from the source outward: clean the PC, calm the fan curve, move the case, aim and close in the mic, isolate the stand, and only then reach for a filter. Record the same ten seconds of silence after each step so you can hear which change paid off. By the time you open the filter menu there should be little left to remove, and your voice will sound like you and not like a recording of you that has been scrubbed.
